samskara

“I wake up every day, right here, right in Punxsutawney, and it’s always February 2nd, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”- Bill Murray as Phil Conners in the movie Groundhog Day

Ever feel like your living the same day over and over and over again?  A lot of times in life we get caught up in our routines and patterns, whether it is work, exercise, diet, or thoughts.  Often a lot of these patterns lead to a less than satisfactory life.  In yoga, these cycles or patterns are called Samskara.

Existential Nihilism is a philosophical theory that states that life has no meaning, and it is up to us to create our own meaning and purpose in life.  It teaches that we have choice.  We can choose a life of meaningless routines or choose a life of fulfilling experiences.  Yoga is a practice that consists of pattern and repetition, the way it is similar to existential nihilism is that is teaches us that we have the choice to break the mundane patterns of our practice by giving it meaning and intention.   Therefore, the yoga practice becomes more fulfilling, rewarding, and insightful. Yoga teaches you to think for yourself, it gives you the strength and ability to make a decision and choose a better life.

Take the samskaras in your life as an opportunity to learn, grow, and evolve into your highest being. Through choice you give yourself the ability to transform routines to rituals, reactions to responses, and the mundane to the marvelous.
